KEARNS, Utah, Nov. 6, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — An overnight SWAT standoff came to a tragic end in Kearns early Thursday morning, when a suspect involved in a domestic violence incident died by suicide.
Unified Police Sgt. Aymee Race told Gephardt Daily the standoff began before 2 a.m., after the suspect violated an active protective order, fled, then returned to a residence near 5100 South 4500 West.
An evacuation order was delivered to nearby residences by way of reverse 911 calls and was assisted by UPD officers who helped escort neighbors from their homes.
Race said gas was turned off at the residence where the suspect was holed up after he threatened to destroy the home, while a school in the area was notified of the ongoing incident.
Negotiators worked throughout the night in an attempt to bring the standoff to a peaceful end, but after talking with police for more than an hour and agreeing to come out of the home, the suspect took his own life about 6 a.m.
Police have remained on scene and are asking people to avoid the area.
Gephardt Daily will update the story as information becomes available.
