LAYTON, Utah, Dec. 15, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Crews responded to the scene of a kitchen fire at a home in Layton on Wednesday afternoon.

Layton City Fire Department was dispatched just after 4:30 p.m. to the structure fire, near 2150 N. 1050 W, said spokesman Douglas Bitton in a news release.

“Firefighters arrived quickly and found the home evacuated by a 11-year-old female who ran out of the home with smoke alarms sounding,” the news release said. “She quickly went to a neighboring home and asked the neighbor to notify 911. She was not injured.”

Crews extinguished a fire originating in the kitchen at the oven and extended to a nearby cabinet.

“Fire investigators were able to determine by interviewing the 11-year-old with her mother that she started the oven to bake a cake unaware that the oven contained pans with plastic handles inside,” the news release goes on. “The oven failed to hold back the heat and fire of plastics and extended to the wooden cabinets.”

The fire caused approximately $4,000 in damages, with aggressive firefighting saving a loss of a structure estimated to be near $270,000.

Bitton said the department “recommends that adults advise children to have an adult at home to supervise when wanting to bake or cook. I compliment this youth making some quick and right decisions to evacuate and go to a neighbor and call 911.”

There were no injuries to firefighters.
