WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, March 8, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A man trying to break into multiple homes in West Valley City was confronted Tuesday morning by a group of neighbors.

West Valley Police Lt. Jeff Conger said the incident began at approximately 10:30 a.m. when a white man was seen trying to open several different doors of residences and witnesses decided to confront him.

“They noticed he had actually walked into one home but left because of their dogs. They then heard a woman in another residence panic and ask the man what he was doing in her home,” Conger said.

“This particular group of individuals tried to detain him and started wrestling with him, but he got away and ran into another home that was unlocked.”

Conger said while the suspect was inside, the neighbors rang the doorbell several times to alert the occupant that someone was inside her home.

“She was sleeping and did wake up and was able to run outside,” Conger said. “A few seconds later they heard him start the car and he drove straight through the garage door without lifting it to get away. He then drove towards Redwood Road where he crashed.”

The suspect then ran on foot across the street where he was caught by police.

Jason Dahlquist, 43, was arrested and booked into Salt Lake County Jail on multiple felony charges including the transfer of a stolen vehicle, aggravated burglary and criminal mischief resulting in damage to a property. He was also charged with misdemeanor assault and hit-and-run.

Conger said he has dealt with Dahlquist in the past and he has a lengthy criminal history.

Police did not find any drugs or drug paraphernalia on the suspect but Conger said it appeared that he was having some sort of episode, possibly drug-related.
