WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Aug. 25, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A 20-year-old man is in police custody Saturday night after fleeing when an officer attempted to stop him for a minor traffic infraction in the area of Redwood Road and 3100 South.

Roxanne Vainuku, spokeswoman for West Valley City Police Department, said the incident began at about 5:20 p.m., when a truck “pulled out right in front of an officer, and when the officer tried to stop him, (the suspect) threw it into reverse and slammed into the police car.”

A brief pursuit ensued as the suspect fled, first pulling into the nearby Maverik station, then driving east across Redwood Road into the lot of the Utah Auto Spa car wash.

From there, he jumped the curb, drove over a grass berm and plowed through a fence into the Family Dollar parking lot, where he struck another vehicle, Vainuku said.

At that point, the man left the truck and ran on foot back across Redwood, where he was apprehended.

The truck he had been driving — a state-owned flatbed truck — was stolen, Vainuku said.

No one was injured in this incident. The woman who was driving the car that was hit in the Family Dollar lot declined any medical treatment.

Vainuku said the suspect, whose name was not released, was in custody and would be screened for drugs.
