According to UHP,  Graham Ambrose, age 51, from Sandy was standing behind his Honda Civic around 9 p.m. when he was hit from behind by an eastbound Nissan Acura.

Sgt. Chamberlin Neff, Utah Highway Patrol said Ambrose had pulled off to the right and his wife, Lynette Ambrose, age 63, from Sandy, stayed in the vehicle.

While Ambrose was looking for tools in the trunk, a white Acura, driven by Anthony Lopez, 21, of Clearfield, was traveling eastbound SR-201 at the same location and for some unknown reason lost control and ran into the back of the Accord, with Mr. Ambrose standing at the trunk area.

The impact threw Mr. Ambrose 200 feet, coming to rest in the emergency lane. He was pronounced dead on scene.

Witnesses told investigators the Nissan was driving 90 to 100 mph at the time of the crash.

Both Mrs. Ambrose and Lopez were taken to Pioneer Valley Hospital in serious condition.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
