FARMINGTON, Utah, Nov. 27, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A memorial service has been announced for Davis County Sheriff Department K-9 Chopper, who died last Wednesday after being struck in the roadway by a vehicle, officials said.

“Chopper, a K-9 with Davis County Sheriff’s Office for 5.5 years, died on Nov. 20 after running into traffic and being struck by a vehicle,” the department’s statement said.

“At approximately 7:15 p.m., the deputy/handler of Chopper briefly stopped at the Davis County Sheriff’s Office in Farmington and, while inside, Chopper managed to get out of the truck kennel and ran north, toward State Street.

“Chopper ran directly into live traffic, was hit, and the impact killed him instantly.”

Chopper, a six-and-a half-year-old Shepherd mix, was trained in drug detection, tracking, deputy protection, building and area searches, and the apprehension of suspects, the statement said.

Chopper’s Line-of-Duty Memorial Service will be held at the Legacy Events Center, Building 2, at 151 S. 1100 West, Farmington, on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 11 a.m.

“K-9 handlers, K-9, and their families are encouraged to attend,” said a news release from DCSO Wednesday afternoon. “In addition, the public is invited.”

The public may utilize the south end of the Legacy Events Center parking lot, which is accessible via 1100 West, the news release said.
