CEDAR CITY, Utah, Sept. 7, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — About 250 firefighters are on scene Saturday night at the lightning-caused Neck Fire, about 15 miles north of Cedar City.

This wildfire, which was first reported Thursday afternoon, has burned about 17,800 acres and is now 30% contained.

An update from Neck Fire Information Officer Nick Howell at 5 p.m. Saturday said “firefighters are making good progress and are working with heavy equipment and aircraft to achieve containment objectives under cooler temperatures.”

Grass, sagebrush, pinyon and juniper are fueling the blaze, according to the update, but it isn’t growing significantly and is less active now than it was Friday.

No structures are threatened, and the only road closures are on unpaved roads in the area of the fire. No evacuations have been ordered, and no injuries have been reported as a result of this fire.

On Saturday night, Howell reported that resources assigned to the fire include 16 fire engines, seven hand crews, seven water tenders, three dozers, eight single-engine air tankers (SEATs), four heavy air tankers, three heavy helicopters, and an air attack platform.

A national Type 2 Incident Management Team has been ordered to assume command at 8 a.m. Sunday because of increased complexity.

Gephardt Daily will update this story as more information becomes available.
