MIDVALE, Utah, March 22, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Unified Police officers caught a suspect trying to run from the Midvale OfficeMax with a basket of stolen merchandise Tuesday.

Unified Police Sgt. Jason Norton said the incident began when two officers were finishing lunch at Five Guys Burgers and Fries, 1146 Fort Union Blvd., around 11:30 a.m.

“The officers came out and got in their vehicles and observed a man running through the parking lot down to Fort Union Blvd., carrying a basket from the OfficeMax,” said Norton.

“They thought it was suspicious so they tried to talk to the guy. On immediate contact with the officers the suspect took off on foot, throwing the basket of merchandise away as he ran. The officers ended up pursuing the suspect on foot, going eastbound, and were able to catch him.”

The suspect was caught in the parking lot of Famous Dave’s barbecue restaurant at 1166 Fort Union Blvd., and taken into custody without incident.

He was evaluated by fire officials then transported to Salt Lake County Jail on theft and fleeing charges.

The identity of the suspect has not yet been released.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
