SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Sept. 7, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A woman is recovering from her injuries and a man is in jail after police say he beat the woman in an attempt to kidnap her late Thursday night.
Ousmane Camara, 28, was booked into Salt Lake County Jail and is facing possible charges of kidnapping and assault.
The incident happened a little after 10 p.m., Salt Lake City Police Detective Greg Wilking said. The woman was walking on Redwood Road, when Camara allegedly ran after her, caught her, started hitting her in the face, and dragged her to the parking lot of the African Market.
Wilking said people who were outside heard the woman’s screams, saw what was happening and intervened.
“(The woman) suffered from significant wounds,” Wilking said. “We don’t necessarily understand the nature of the attack or why it occurred.”
He described the incident as “random” and “scary.”
Wilking said this isn’t the first time Camara’s erratic behavior has landed him behind bars.
On Aug. 17, Camaro was involved in an incident in which he stopped a man and woman who were walking into a restaurant with their 1-year-old child, Wilking said. Camara allegedly attempted to take the child from the couple, saying it was his baby.
He was arrested at that time, but was soon back on the street. According to reports, Camara has been involved in multiple incidents of violent or erratic behavior.
When asked why Camara had been released previously, Wilking said, “There are several parts to the justice system. The job of the police and sheriff is to make arrests.” After that, he said, other processes take over.
Expressing some frustration, Wilking said, “We’re seeing a pattern of behavior. He’s coming into contact with police for some significant things. There’s drug use happening, and we’re concerned. Hopefully, he’s gonna be locked up for a while now.”
