RIVERTON, Utah, July 4, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of a two-alarm blaze Friday night that engulfed a Riverton home and forced two occupants to flee after they heard popping noises followed by what they described as an explosion.
The fire was reported about 10:30 p.m. at a home near 12400 South and 2700 West, Unified Fire Authority Capt. Patrick Costin told Gephardt Daily.
The first firefighters to arrive found heavy fire in the attached garage extending into much of the home’s first floor. Crews launched an aggressive attack and quickly knocked down the blaze.
Costin said the two occupants heard popping noises followed by the sound of an explosion. When they opened the door leading to the garage, they found it engulfed in flames and escaped without injury.

Incident commanders initially called a second alarm because of the fire’s intensity, but first-arriving crews gained control quickly, allowing most additional units to remain in staging before being released.
Unified Fire Authority crews were assisted by South Jordan and Bluffdale firefighters.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
