SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Sept. 22, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — An Evergreen Junior High School band and music teacher has been booked into jail on suspicion of felonies involving unlawful activities with a minor.

Jeffery Luke Zawalski, 36, faces:

  • Five counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor, a third-degree felony
  • Ten counts of sexual exploitation of a vulnerable adult (see note below), a second-degree felony
  • One count of enticing a minor by Internet or text, a class A misdemeanor

Note: The sexual exploitation of a vulnerable adult charges are related to pornographic images, which the probable cause statement says were of one or more minors. It is unclear why the charges are listed as being related to a vulnerable adults.

The unlawful sexual activity with a minor charges are related to a 15-year-old person whose gender was not specified in court papers. It also was not specified whether the teen was a student at the school where Zawalski taught.

“Zawalski arranged to meet 15-year-old minor victim … via email on five separate occasions to meet for unlawful sexual activity,” the probable cause statement says.

“The A/P (arrested person) also asked for and received at least 10 images of child pornography from the 15-year-old victim. At the time of arrest the A/P was in possession of more than 10 pornographic images of children.”

Zawalski was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail just after midnight on Saturday, the probable cause statement says. His bail was set at $26,950. He was still in custody as of 5 p.m. Sunday, according to jail records.

An email to parents with students at Evergreen Junior High was sent out on Saturday.

“We were recently notified and wanted to alert you regarding some disturbing information from the Salt Lake City Police  Department, wherein our band and music teacher, Mr. Zelwalski, was arrested last evening on some very serious charges involving inappropriate contact with a minor,” the statement says.
“We are still gathering information on this matter but he has been placed on leave in the interim. Student safety is our primary concern and we take these charges very seriously. We have received no indication from SLCPD that Granite School District students were involved. However, if any families have further information we encourage them to contact the SLCPD immediately.”
