SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 12, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Police responded to a “shots fired” call just before 1 a.m. Sunday and found a man with a gunshot wound and an elderly woman who may have been thrown down a flight of stairs by the assailant.
Sgt. Josh Ashdown, Salt Lake City Police Department, said the male victim had been shot once in the arm and was initially thought to be in stable condition.
The man was transported to the hospital, where his condition was downgraded to critical.
An elderly woman and a couple of children were inside the home, near 500 N. 1400 West, and Ashdown said they’re OK, although the woman “encountered the suspects at one point and was possibly thrown down the stairs.” She was bruised but will be all right, he said.
When asked how the violent incident came about, Ashdown replied, “We don’t know what led up to it at all at this point.”
He said it’s still very early in the investigation and officers, including members of the Metro Gang Unit who were already in the area, were canvassing the neighborhood.
“We’re scouring the area for any witnesses, cameras, and any related calls that might be linked to this event,” Ashdown said.
Police have yet to confirm the type of vehicle that may have been involved in the incident.
“We do know there were possibly two suspects, and we know for sure that one was wearing a mask,” Ashdown said.
Police are asking neighbors in the area who have surveillance cameras of any kind to check their cameras for footage that may show the suspects or their vehicle.
Anyone with any information is asked to call SLCPD at 801-799-3000.
