SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 10, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City police investigators say a man arrested after an alleged domestic violence incident Sunday in a Central City apartment has been released from the hospital and booked into jail.
The suspect has been identified as Lavell Zachery Grant, 38.
Grant’s arrest document alleges an argument began because a woman in the apartment did not want him to have a gun there.
A male who was sharing the apartment told police he opened a bedroom door and saw Grant grab the woman’s hand and “bend it back.”
The woman told Grant she was going to call the police, at which point Grant grabbed her phone and threw it.
The woman then told the male resident to call police, the court document says, and as the man was turning on his phone, Grant allegedly wrapped his arm around his neck, causing him to start losing consciousness.
The male resident grabbed a knife and started stabbing Grant in the side in hopes of stopping the choking attack, according to an SLCPD officer’s affidavit.
Grant then grabbed the knife and cut the man’s hands while attempting to stab him in the neck, the court document says.
The woman made it out of the bedroom, returned and started hitting Grant with a lamp, the police account says.
Grant allegedly grabbed both victims, but then released them before going to the kitchen, where he retrieved a rifle and walked back toward the bedroom.
The male tried to shut the bedroom door, but Grant forced his way back in, charging documents say.
“Both victims ran out the back door of the bedroom as (Grant) fired shots from the rifle in their direction.”
The arrest document says Grant is an intimate partner of one of the victims. He lives in a different state and is on felony probation for a weapons offense.
