SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Feb. 22, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — A 34-year-old man was arrested Saturday afternoon after he allegedly entered the apartment of a woman he didn’t know at 2 a.m., refused to leave, took a shower using her products, and told her he had been “watching her plus loving her for the past six months.”
An arrest document filed for Chadwell Clement Smith says he entered the apartment, in the area of 700 East and 700 South, when the resident left her door open a crack at 2 a.m. to let her dog out.
She then went to her bathroom and reportedly heard a voice inside her apartment asking, “Hello, anyone there?” The victim then found Smith, whom she did not know, inside her apartment, says the statement, filed by an officer of the Salt Lake City Police Department.
The victim said Smith was holding an axe, but set it down, hugged her, and asked her to sit and talk. The victim said Smith sat on her floor and rubbed her legs and feet, which she did not want him to do, but she was scared. Smith reportedly told the victim “he was going to give her the time of her life.”
The victim told a friend by phone what was going on, and the friend said she would call police to conduct a welfare check.
“The victim saw (Smith) get into her shower and help himself to her shower products, such as her shampoo, without her permission, and she described that (Smith) asked her to get ready, giving her 30 minutes, and said he would be right back, and he went in and took a shower and never asked.”
Post Miranda, Smith told the SLCPD officer “he did not rub her legs but intended on giving her a back massage and that he has been watching and loving her for the past 6 months. Tonight, he admitted to me that he saw that the door was open and that he announced himself, thinking he had heard her voice coming from inside the residence before he entered into the apartment thinking that this was his shot.
“He told me that his intention was to take her out on a date and to get an Uber up near the University of Utah underneath a tree and was intending on kissing her there and ‘feeling out’ the situation, and informed me that he would want to have sex with the victim prior to a supposed marriage.”
Smith later told the officer he wanted to take the victim to “some sort of underground construction sight near a mall and told me that he lied about actually wanting to take her to the university,” arrest documents say.
Marijuana reportedly was found inside Smith’s backpack. He told the officer he had the axe and knife “as a means to defend himself.”
Smith was booked into the Salt Lake County jail system for investigation of the alleged crimes of:
- Burglary of a dwelling, a second-degree felony
- Kidnapping, a second-degree felony
- Prohibited dangerous weapon conduct, a class B misdemeanor
- Possession of controlled substances marijuana, a class B misdemeanor
Smith was ordered held without bail.
