SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah, March 1, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — A man was booked into jail after he allegedly left the Winco at 2193 S. Main without paying for merchandise stuffed in his pants, then fought with loss prevention officers, and fled from arriving South Salt Lake Police officers.
Leonard Dwayne Clark, 31, was booked for investigation of the alleged crimes of robbery, a second-degree felony; and failure to stop at command of law enforcement, a class A misdemeanor.
Police were called to the store at about 8:26 p.m. Saturday. Upon arrival, they were told Clark and his girlfriend had fled, his arrest document says.
Loss prevention employees at the store told police Clark had been observed on camera loading merchandise into his pants. They said Clark had gone through the checkout stand, where he paid for some other items but did not present or pay for the items he had hidden in his pants. Clark then exited the store, they said.
Loss prevention workers approached Clark and tried to take him inside to the security office, but he grabbed the door frame and refused to go inside, his arrest document says.
Clark reportedly called for his girlfriend, who joined in the physical fight, and Clark reportedly bit one of the loss prevention officers, arrest documents say.
Clark managed to break away and run, but was located by arriving South Salt Lake officers, who identified themselves as police and commanded him to stop. Clark continued to run, but police officers caught up to him and he was arrested.
The name of his girlfriend and her arrest status were not immediately available.
