SALT LAKE CITY, UT – APRIL 15, 2015 (GEPHARDT DAILY) – For the first time since the accident happened on March 13, Caleb Stone’s father got to hear his son’s voice for the first time today.

“He called for an update on his son from work and got to hear the words ‘I LOVE YOU DAD.’ ” said Betty Allsop, a co-worker of Caleb’s dad.

“The excitement in his face and tears that developed in his eyes were priceless…just another friendly reminder that no matter how bad my day is, there is always something good I can search for to make it better, even if it’s searching for it within someone else,” said Allsop.

According to Caleb stone’s Road to Recovery Facebook Page, on April 13th, exactly a month after the accident, they removed Caleb’s trach and he had been breathing on his own for about a week. The doctors worried that all the tubes down his throat in the beginning may have damaged his vocal cords but it only took 2 days before Caleb had something to day to his dad.

Caleb has been able to stand a little even though his balance is off, which doctors have said maybe due to the trach. And it is possible he will spend the next 4-6 weeks in rehab.

On March 13th, the 17-year-old student was with a group of about five or six friends and was just entering the crosswalk located about 7500 S. 900 East. “It appears he was getting on his skateboard just when a Mitsubishi Montero struck him,” said Justin Hoyal of Unified Police Department.

He also said that they are still trying to determine exactly who had the right of way but that the driver of the vehicle, who stopped immediately after striking the teen, is fully cooperating with them.
