SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah, May 7, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) — A suspect has been arrested after he allegedly attacked a man with a knife in South Salt Lake.
A probable cause statement from the 3rd District Court of Salt Lake County said Eric Jones, 29, is facing a charge of aggravated assault, a second-degree felony.
On May 4, the victim was assaulted in his apartment by Jones with a large knife or machete, the statement said. The victim stated “he thought the suspect, later identified as Jones, was going to kill him,” the statement said.
“The victim was slashed and cut seriously, and had extensive injuries to his hand, head, and neck,” the statement said. “The lacerations to his head and neck were deep and were several inches long. The victim also had to have his thumb attached back to his hand via surgery.”
During the assault, Jones left his cell phone in the victim’s apartment before he fled.
The arresting officer located Jones at a court-ordered rehab center after he had been released from jail on unrelated charges; he is currently on probation.
After being read his Miranda rights, Jones allegedly admitted to attacking the victim with what he described as a kitchen knife, but claimed the attack was provoked by the victim.
Jones was transported to Salt Lake County Jail, where he was later ordered to be released with conditions.
