A call came into Unified Police Department reporting suspicious circumstances when witnesses saw a woman who injured herself jumping over a fence near a strip mall on 4100 South and 1800 West. “We do not know why she was going over the fence in the first place but when officers arrived, she told them she was with her boyfriend and pointed to the black SUV parked on the street,” said Lt. Lex Bell, Unified Police.

Officers approached the boyfriend to ask him what was going on and as they were checking his identification he attempted to back up the car and take off. “When he couldn’t successfully get away by backing up, he jumped out of the car and ran on foot where officers were able to catch up with him hiding behind a dumpster,” said Bell.

The woman was not seriously injured but was transported to the hospital as a precaution. She also has minor warrants outstanding, police said.

The suspect, identified as Alberto Avilla, 30, was booked on several outstanding warrants, a probation violation and new misdemeanor charges of fleeing from police.
