WEBER COUNTY, Utah, Feb. 17, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — Tyler Peterson, 23, was sentenced Tuesday to five years to life in prison for the July 2024 abuse and neglect death of his 12-year-old brother, Gavin Peterson.

Already sentenced in the case were Shane Peterson, the boys’ father, and Nichole Lea Scott, Shane’s wife and the brothers’ stepmother. Last year, Shane Peterson was sentenced to five years to life in prison. Scott was sentenced to 15 years to life.

Tyler Peterson was sentenced to five years to life and two terms of one to 15 years.

Gavin, who had been withdrawn from school for the stated purpose of homeschooling, was found deceased at the family’s West Haven residence.

Affidavits contained in probable cause statements, filed after his family members’ arrests, indicated Gavin “was found malnourished, wearing a saturated diaper.” Also found were notes that detailed beatings, and documented “limiting food to a third of a cup of water and a piece of bread with mustard.”

Court documents also said Gavin had been ill for several days prior to his death, and “experiencing vomiting and seizures, but was not taken to a doctor.”
