Update: Dog saves residents from raging Sandy house fire; neighbors, mail carrier join rescue efforts

SANDY, Utah, Feb. 5, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — There’s new information on a devastating house fire that caused $150K in damages and forced 3 residents to flee their Sandy home Saturday morning.

According to neighbors, two women sleeping inside the residence were saved by their dog – a mix-breed boxer who alerted the pair that the house was burning.

Shawn Berger was driving by the home at 1255 E. 10600 South about 10 a.m. when he saw smoke pouring from the structure.

He told Gephardt Daily he jumped from his car and joined a mail carrier and another man who were attempting to knockdown a backyard fence.

Once the fence was down the two women and their dog ran to meet them.

Berger said the women told him the dog had saved their lives, but another man – their landlord – was still asleep in the basement.

Berger wasted no time, running inside the home and rousting the sleeping landlord. They ran to safety as fire fighters arrived.

Battalion Chief Chris Dawson, Sandy Fire Department, said the blaze broke out in the garage, but also caused extensive damaged to the house. In all, the fire caused about $150,000 in damage.

“The house is not habitable right now, and probably won’t be for some time,” he added.

Dawson said early evidence suggests smoking materials may have ignited the fire, but the investigation is ongoing.
