The city’s former top law enforcement received his walking papers Thursday afternoon in the form of an ultimatum posed by Salt Lake Mayor Ralph Becker – either apologize for the handling of the simmering sexual harassment scandal within the ranks of the SLCPD, be fired, or resign.

Burbank, in his ninth year as Salt Lake City police chief, decided to call it quits.

In a hastily convened press conference Thursday, just a few feet from police headquarters he ran for nearly a decade, the city’s former top cop shot back at his detractors, characterizing their motivation as little more than political posturing in the middle of an election year.
