WASHINGTON, July 8 (UPI) — The number of unaccompanied children from Central America entering the United States illegally has significantly dropped compared to a record surge last year.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency said it apprehended 26,685 unaccompanied children entering the U.S. from Central America from Oct. 1, 2014 through June 30. That’s down from 57,478, or a 54 percent drop, from the same nine-month period last year.

According to new statistics released by the Border Patrol on Tuesday, apprehensions of children entering the country illegally with adults are also down by 55 percent compared to the previous year. The Rio Grande Valley, in south Texas, remains the most popular crossing point for Central American migrants entering the U.S.

The Border Patrol said the number of unaccompanied Central American families fell 59 percent from 42,363 to 17,179.

Last summer, the Border Patrol in south Texas was overwhelmed by a surge of unaccompanied children fleeing Central America to travel into the U.S. illegally. The surge created a political firestorm for President Obama as the administration tried to determine how to best handle the crisis.
