Fleeing Robbery Suspect Shot Dead From Police Chopper During Chase Near L.A.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif., Sept. 18 (UPI) — A man wanted in a home invasion robbery near Los Angeles was shot to death Friday by a sharpshooter hovering above in a police helicopter — following a high-speed chase on a busy freeway.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were chasing the man on Interstate 215 when he aimed his SUV at oncoming traffic and collided with one vehicle.

The suspect leaped from the vehicle and tried to escape on foot when he was felled by the sharpshooter, officials said.

The suspect died at the scene and three people from the other vehicle were hospitalized, the L.A. area’s Press-Enterprise reported Friday. Their conditions and the extent of their injuries were not immediately revealed.

All northbound lanes of I-215 near Devore Heights were closed as authorities processed the crime scene, Fox News L.A. reported.

Officials said deputies began pursuing the suspect just before 1 p.m. local time Friday. In his flight from the law, authorities said, the man’s Chevrolet SUV reached speeds of at least 100 mph on I-215.

Devore Heights is about 60 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.
