UPDATE: College Shooting Suspect Captured
DAYTONA BEACH, FL., April 14 (UPI) – Kenneth Stancil, suspected in the death of a Wayne Community College employee, was arrested in Daytona Beach, Fla., on Tuesday.
Stancil, 20, was approached by Volusia County Beach Patrol for violating the city’s ordinance prohibiting sleeping on the beach at about 1:30 a.m. The officers found a knife on him and he was detained for further identification.
College print shop employee Ron Lane was killed after he was shot by a gunman on Monday in the Goldsboro, N.C., campus. Authorities issued a manhunt for Kenneth Stancil, described as a white man, about five-foot-eleven with a goatee and tattoo above his left eye.
Stancil’s mother, Debbie Stancil, said her son accused Lane of making “inappropriate sexual advances toward him.” No motive has been established.
“Lock Down. This is not a drill. The entire campus is under lockdown,” the school said on its website.
Law enforcement officials swept through each room in all buildings of the campus to allow people to leave. Wayne County Day School was also put on lockdown.
“We saw 10 to 11 cruisers go by all at once,” Melissa Watkins, a volunteer parent receptionist, said. “We knew something was going on; we just didn’t know what or where.”
The Red Cross was brought to talk to some of the college students who were asked to stay on the campus.
The Volusia County Florida Prosecutor’s Office is working with the Goldsboro Police Department and the Wayne County District Attorney’s Office to extradite Stancil to Wayne County.
