Shipping container explodes on California’s Terminal Island

SAN PEDRO, California, Oct. 31, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A shipping container exploded on Terminal Island early Tuesday evening, and officials began the process of investigating 10 other shipping containers believed to be carrying the same material.

The container was loaded with scrap metal to be exported out of the country.

According to a U.S. Coast Guard news release, the explosion occurred about 6 p.m.

Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach watchstanders received a report of a shipping container explosion at the Evergreen Terminal under the Vincent Thomas Bridge.

“The Evergreen Terminal has been evacuated,” the news release states. “All other terminals remain open. The explosion is believed to be an industrial accident.”

According to the release, no injuries were reported.

Responding to the scene in addition to the Coast Guard were the Los Angeles Port Police, Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Fire Department, and Customs and Border Protection.
