WAIKIKI , Hawaii, Oct. 18 (UPI) — Two men in Hawaii were seriously injured in separate shark attacks within an eight-hour period Saturday, the latest in a spate of attacks that have left at least six injured and one dead.
About noon, a 44-year-old man was swimming toward shore off Lanikai Beach when he was attacked. About 7:30 p.m., a 32-year-old man was attacked off Waikiki.
Lanikai resident Mike Dilks and friend Joey Montano said they helped the man attacked off Lanikai Beach, putting tourniquets on his legs. Montano said the man’s injuries were “pretty extreme,” adding both legs above the ankle “were just hanging on.”
“I didn’t realize the severity of his injuries until we pulled him out of the water,” Dilks said. Some witnesses said the shark was a seven-foot tiger shark.
Other shark attacks so far this year in Hawaii include:
Sept. 20 — A 27-year-old man suffered severe leg injuries after being bitten by a 13-foot tiger shark.
April 29 — A 65-year-old woman was killed as a result of a shark bite off Ahihi Bay in Maui.
March 18 — A 60-year-old man suffered bites to his arms and legs from an 8- to 10-foot tiger shark off Hapuna Beach.
Jan. 27 — A 20-year-old Maui man was bitten by a shark he caught while fishing off Lahaina.
