The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office reported Jamie Croom, 31, wanted in the killing Deputy US Marshal Josie Wells, 27, of Mississippi,  has died.

He was shot and killed during a shootout that occurred when a task force made up of law enforcement from the Baton Rouge area and the US Marshals Service went to the motel room where Croom was staying. He has also been wanted in a double homicide that left a brother and sister dead back on February 18.

Witnesses were in the parking lot of the Sugar Shack Bar on Mandela Lane in New Roads where they said they heard 10 to 12 gunshots. Following the gunshots, they said that the police were carrying the marshal out of the hotel room and that it looked to be very serious.

The witness also indicated that she saw Wells’ fellow officers desperately trying to stop the bleeding. Deputies raced Wells to Lane Regional Medical Center, where he soon died. Wells had been with the US Marshals Service for four years.
