TORONTO, Canada, July 22, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Emergency services were at the scene of a shooting in Toronto’s Riverdale neighborhood Sunday night.
According to Toronto City News, the incident began at about 10 p.m. (Toronto time) in the city’s Greektown.
Witnesses said they heard as many as 25 gunshots. According to police, the shooter used a handgun.
It initially was reported that at least nine people were transported to the hospital, and according to paramedics, some had significant injuries. Later, the number of wounded was increased to 14, including a woman who had died.
“Six victims have been transported to trauma centres, 1 to a pediatric trauma centre and two to local hospitals while an unconfirmed number of people are being treated at the scene,” CityNews reported.
The condition of everyone who was wounded is not currently known, but CNN quoted Police Chief Mark Saunders as saying that a child — a young girl — was in critical condition.
A local reporter tweeted “victims are spread across many blocks,” according to SBS News.
It was reported that the shooter is dead, but officials haven’t said who the shooter is or what the motive was for the seemingly random attack. Saunders said every aspect of the incident is being thoroughly investigated.
Streets in the area have been closed, and Toronto Transit trains were not making stops at the local station because of the police activity in the area.
Gephardt Daily will follow up on this developing story as more information is released.
