Oregon State Police are now saying 10 people, including the gunman, have been killed, and at least seven others wounded, in a mass shooting at the Umpqua Community College campus in rural southwest Oregon.

The shooter has been identified by Oregon law enforcement officials as 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer. Authorities believe he was an area resident and not affiliated with the school.

Mercer was reportedly armed with three hand guns and a what is being described as an assault rifle at the time of the attack.

The shootings were first called into police at 10:38 a.m. Thursday at Snyder Hall on the Umpqua Community College campus.

The Marshal County Sheriff John Hanlin said the lone gunman was killed after exchanging gunfire with police.

“We do know that we have at least two heroic officers who responded into the building within minutes and exchanged gunfire with the suspect,” Hanlin said.

Kortney Moore, 18, a student from Rogue River, Oregon told a reporter from News Review Today she was in her composition class in Snyder Hall when one shot came through a window. She says saw her teacher shot in the head and that the shooter entered the classroom and told people to get on the ground.

Moore told the News Review Today the shooter then told people to stand up and state their religion and then opened fire. Moore said she ended up lying on the floor with people who had been shot.

The entire campus is now being considered a crime. Over a 100 police personnel have been dispatched to the scene, including federal agents from the the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

Umpqua Community College is located about three hours south of Portland. It offers two-year degree programs and serves approximately 20,000 students, the vast majority of which are part time.
