UPDATE: Body Missing Paddle Boarder at Rockport State Park Found

PEOA, UTAH – July 18, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – Summit County Search and Rescue have recovered the body of 21-year-old Joshua Merkley, of Layton who went missing after becoming separated from his paddle board Friday afternoon.

According to Sheriff Justin Martinez with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, Merkley  became separated from his paddle board after a strong wind came through the area around 3:30 p.m.

Search and Rescue crews from Wasatch County, Utah State Parks and Life Flight are currently in the water with the side scan sonar searching the area the victim was last seen.

Searchers started at 6 a.m. Saturday morning and used  sonar in the water and search and rescue crews walking the shoreline looking for Joshua. They recovered his body Saturday afternoon. Merkley was not wearing a life jacket.

The Merkley family has asked for privacy at this time.
