SANDY, Utah, April 8, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A suspected gang member is in custody after police say he led them on a high-speed chase in a stolen car.

Members of the Metro Gang Unit arrested a suspect at about 2:30 a.m. Friday after they stopped the car near Little Cottonwood Canyon by using spike strips that took one of the front tires completely off the vehicle.

The tire damage made the car difficult to control, and it stopped after crashing off the road and into a rough, weed-filled area.

Lt. John Barker, Unified Police Department, said a female passenger who tried to run from the car fell and hit her head, and was taken to the hospital to close a wound with stitches.

Officers who searched the stolen car found heroin and drug paraphernalia, Barker said.

Officers from the Metro Gang Unit originally spotted the stolen car at Sandy’s Quarry Bend Shopping Center, Barker said. Unit members tried to block the vehicle with their cars. The suspect backed into a Utah Highway Patrol cruiser before fleeing the scene in the move that initiated the chase.
