Student,13, Kills Teacher with Crossbow Loaded With Pens in Spain

SpainBARCELONA, Spain, April 20 (UPI) — A 13-year-old boy was arrested Monday morning for allegedly killing a teacher with a crossbow loaded with ballpoint pens at a school in Barcelona, Spain.

The boy arrived an hour late for class at the Joan Foster Institute, carrying a wooden crossbow and knife in his backpack. He initially targeted a female teacher and her daughter, who suffered minor injuries.

Hearing the screams during the attack, a male social science substitute teacher entered the classroom to protect people but was fatally stabbed in the chest, according to local reports.

Another student was stabbed with a knife in the chest. All injured were taken to the Sant Pau hospital and are in stable condition.

The boy’s classmates said the suspect repeatedly said last week he would kill all teachers and then himself. Children under the age of 14, who commit murder are not liable in Spain, with measures being taken to educational services and the family instead.

Mayor of Barcelona Xavier Trias said he would visit the scene with Education and Universities Councilman Gerard Ardanuy and councilor of the city of Barcelona Raimond Blasi Navarro.

“Appalled by the tragic event at the Joan Foster Institute. With councilors [Ardanuy] and [Navarro] we moved to the scene,” Trias tweeted.

Laws in Spain to acquire a crossbow are the same as to acquire a shotgun.
