LOS ANGELES – November 23, 2015 — (UPI) — Jenna Dewan says Lucy Lane will have a genuine friendship with Kara Danvers on Supergirl.
The 34-year-old actress opened up about her story line in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published Monday. Dewan plays Lucy on the CBS series, with Benoist as Kara, aka Supergirl, and Mehcad Brooks as the pair’s love interest, Jimmy Olson.
Dewan’s introduction episode was delayed in the wake of the Paris attacks due to its terrorism plot line, but will air on Monday at 8 p.m. ET. The network broadcast the following episode instead, which sees Lucy and Jimmy get back together.
“The [introduction] episode will clear up a lot of deep questions people have about James and Lucy,” the star revealed. “I wasn’t interested in coming on as playing this old, intentional foil to James and Kara … This isn’t just a love triangle story line.”
Dewan said the show’s writers created a “realistic female story” where Lucy develops a friendship with Kara, instead of just being an “ice queen” who “shake[s] things up.” The actress promised the relationship blossoms into “awesome and exciting” plot lines to come.
“I let her in on some of my insecurities about James and stuff that happens to be about Supergirl,” she shared. “So we bond over a common thing that all women have, which is moments of weakness and moments of strength. So I get to be vulnerable and talk with Kara, and that creates a friendship.”
Supergirl premiered in October, and co-stars Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, Jeremy Jordan as Winn Schott, Jr., David Harewood as Hank Henshaw and Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant. The series follows Kara as she embraces and begins to use her powers as Supergirl.
