LAYTON, Utah, July 19, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — The Layton Fire Department responded to two brush fires within minutes of each other Wednesday afternoon.
The first brush fire was reported at 3:09 p.m. near the east gate of Hill Field Air Force Base and spread outside the fencing into Layton City boundaries, Fire Marshal Douglas K. Bitton said in a news release.
Both Hill Field and Layton fire units responded. The Hill Field East Gate fire was caused by a commercial lawn mower, which also received minor damage. The fire burned approximately two acres. No dollar loss information has been released.
A second brush fire was reported at Andy Adams Reservoir, located near 1686 E. Gordon Ave., at 3:17 p.m. This fire spread quickly in brush and dry grass. Layton, Kaysville and Syracuse fire departments responded to the scene, and the fire was contained to less than an acre. The fire damaged a canoe, water hose and part of a residential lawn, causing $3,000 in damages.
Four juveniles were reported running from the second fire. Layton police were able to locate and question the four juveniles, and a 16-year-old male admitted to starting the fire with a lighter. His case was referred to the Juvenile Justice Courts and he was released to his parents at the scene.
“We need to respect fire’s devastating potential in these dry conditions, especially with the upcoming holiday and legal fireworks discharge date coming this Friday,” Bitton said in a prepared statement. “We ask the public to heed all restrictions and warnings.”
