PLEASANT GROVE, Utah, July 6, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Police were at the scene of a fatal shooting Friday evening at 1373 West and 3040 North, after a man showed up at his brother’s home and an altercation ensued.

The incident occurred just before 6 p.m., when the 50-year-old man, who was not supposed to be at the home, started banging on the front door, witnesses told police.

Pleasant Grove Police Capt. Michael Roberts said the man was holding a claw hammer in one hand and a sledgehammer in the other hand.

When a woman inside the home opened the door, there was a short altercation.

At that point, Roberts said, “Another family member — the 28-year-old son (of the homeowner) — stepped in the doorway and shot the man in the chest.”

The man’s motive for showing up at the residence with the hammer and sledgehammer is not known, Roberts said, but there is some history between the two brothers, and police believe the one who was trespassing suffered from some mental illnesses.

He was shot once in the chest, and first responders administered CPR and other life-saving measures from the time they arrived on scene until they got to American Fork Hospital, where the man died.

The 28-year-old son of the homeowner was taken to a different hospital to be evaluated, Roberts said, because the incident was very traumatic for him.

Officials are still gathering information, and any specifics as to the “history” between the deceased man and his brother are not currently clear.

Gephardt Daily will update this story as more information becomes available.
