NAIROBI, Kenya, July 18 (UPI) — After an extensive renovation and rebuilding project, the upscale mall that was the site of a 2013 terror attack that left 67 dead and hundreds injured reopened Saturday.

The Westgate mall, once the country’s most elite shopping destination, reopened with new stores, including food establishments such as KFC and Subway, as well as tight security provided by the Israeli security company I.R.G. New security features will include explosive detectors, luggage X-rays, and bullet-proof guard towers. Even with this, some of those who survived the attack say they will not return.

Orthodontist Sunil Sachdeva, who ran a practice inside the mall with his wife, told the BBC he could no longer work there.

“I didn’t leave the country but going back to Westgate – in my opinion, you know, to me it is a graveyard,” he said. “So many people met their death there.”

Gunmen stormed the mall, once considered a shining example of the country’s growing prosperity, on Sept. 21, 2013, spraying bullets and tossing grenades and keeping hostages for four days. The al-Shabab, a Somalian extremist group affiliated with al-Qaida, claimed responsibility.

Nairobi County Gov. Evans Kidero invited Kenyans to shop at Westgate, saying safety is not a concern anymore. President Obama is expected to visit Kenya next week.

“Kenya is safer than ever. If it wasn’t, Obama would not be coming,” Kidero said.
