SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Nov. 18, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Utah Clean Energy is warning customers of a phone scam that began Thursday.

The company has received hundreds of phone calls complaining about the attack, Utah Clean Energy said in a news release.

“Potentially hundreds of cellphone customers received calls that appeared to come from Utah Clean Energy’s main phone number,” said Sarah Wright, executive director. “However, these calls were not initiated by our organization, rather from someone ‘spoofing’ our organization’s main phone number.”

What You Need to Know:

  • The calls appear to have been placed to Utah-based cellphone customers with 801 and 435 area codes.
  • Customers who received the spoofing call reported being treated very rudely, and others reported that the callers were trying to sell them solar installations.
  • Utah Clean Energy is working to resolve this issue, but unfortunately, IT expert and phone carrier reports that spoofing events are on the rise, and unfortunately, there is little that residents or businesses can do to prevent spoofing attacks.
