You Can Make Money on YouTube

Channing Lowe is a film instructor at Salt Lake Community College, but his hobby of making videos for YouTube has actually turned into a nice side job.

“YouTube is insane, as far as people making careers off of YouTube” Lowe said.

It all started when Lowe made a video to play a prank on his mother.

“She thought her house was haunted,” Lowe explained. She asked him to bring some of his video and audio equipment over and just do some recordings in the house.

“I did a little special effect where you saw a ghost up at the top of the stairs,” Lowe said. “It scared the crap out of my Mom.”

Lowe told his mother that the video was a fake, but then he posted it on YouTube under the title “Ghost At The Top Of The Stairs.” Within six months to a year, he had received over a million views on it.

Lowe then learned that he could make money by using the “monetize video” setting on his YouTube channel, and he began posting filmmaking tutorials.

After ten thousand views on his YouTube channel, Lowe was eligible to start receiving money from advertisers, simply because he clicked the monetize button and followed the rules by not included any copyrighted materials.

“Every two months I’d get a hundred and ten to a hundred and fifty dollars,” Lowe explained. “I’m going to save it up and buy a nice little gaming computer.

Lowe said that it’s very difficult to know what is going to make money.

“It’s like, some of these things take off because it’s a cute little kitten wrestling with a squirrel,” Lowe said. “ Or it’s somebody slamming their finger in a car door and the way they react. You can almost never guess what’s going to go crazy, what’s going to go viral and what’s not.”

Do you know anyone making money off of YouTube?
