LOS ANGELES, Dec. 29 (UPI) — Ariana Grande is speaking out against a male fan who “objectified” her during a recent encounter.
The 23-year-old singer penned a lengthy post Tuesday on Twitter after she and boyfriend Mac Miller had a run-in with fan that left her feeling “sick” and degraded.
“Went to pick up food with my boyfriend tonight and a young boy followed us to the car to tell Mac that he’s a big fan,” Grande recounted. “I thought all of this was cute and exciting until he said ‘ariana is sexy as hell man i see you, i see you hitting that!!!’ *pause* Hitting that? the [expletive]??”
“This may not seem like a big deal to some of you but I felt sick and objectified,” she admitted. “Things like happen all the time and are the kinds of moments that contribute to women’s sense of fear and inadequacy. I am not a piece of meat that a man gets to utilize for his pleasure. I’m an adult human being in a relationship with a man who treats me with love and respect.”
“I felt like speaking out about this one experience tonight because I know very well that most women know the sensation of being spoken about in an uncomfortable way publicly or taken advantage of publicly by a man,” the star explained. “We need to talk about these moments openly because they are harmful and they live on inside of us as shame.”
Grande had shared similar sentiments in 2015 in response to public interest in her romantic life. She took to Twitter after The Sun reportedly quizzed her about ex-boyfriend Big Sean and her then-rumored love interest Niall Horan.
“I am tired of living in a world where women are mostly referred to as a man’s past, present or future PROPERTY / POSSESSION. I… do not. belong. to anyone. but myself,” the star asserted.
“I know y’all already know this but the double standard and misogyny are still ever present. I can’t wait to live in a world where people are not valued by who they’re dating / married to /attached to, having sex with (or not) / seen with…. but by their value as an individual,” she added.
Grande last released the album Dangerous Woman in May, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and includes the singles “Into You” and “Side to Side.” She confirmed her relationship with Miller in September.
