‘La La Land,’ ‘Moonlight,’ ‘Manchester by the Sea’ and ‘Jackie’ win top Critics’ Choice Awards for film

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 12 (UPI) — The contemporary movie musical “La La Land” was the big winner at the Critics’ Choice Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

In addition to taking the top film prize of best picture, it also won the awards for best director for Damien Chazelle, cinematography, production design, editing and score. The movie tied in the best original screenplay category with “Manchester by the Sea,” as well.

“Manchester” also earned the honors for best actor for Casey Affleck and best young actor/actress for Lucas Hedges.

The best acting ensemble title went to “Moonlight,” with cast member Mahershala Ali winning for best supporting actor.

“Jackie” scored the award for best actress for Natalie Portman, as well as the statuettes for best costumes, and hair and makeup.

“Arrival” was deemed best sci-fi/horror movie and won the prize for best adapted screenplay.

“Hacksaw Ridge” was voted best action movie and its star Andrew Garfield the best actor in an action movie. “Suicide Squad” co-star Margot Robbie was named best actress in an action movie.

Ryan Reynolds garnered the honors for entertainer of the year and best actor in a comedy for “Deadpool,” which was also elected best comedy.

“Fences” standout Viola Davis was recognized as best supporting actress, and the best actress in a comedy accolade went to Meryl Streep for “Florence Foster Jenkins.”

“Zootopia” was recognized as the year’s best animated movie.
