LOS ANGELES, Aug. 4 (UPI) — Fans of Warner Bros. and DC Comics latest cinematic effort, “Suicide Squad,” is fighting back against critics with a change.org petition.
Created by Abdullah Coldwater of Alexandria, Egypt, the petition which has obtained over 17,000 signatures, asks for popular review collection site Rotten Tomatoes to be shut down.
“We need this site to be shut down because It’s Critics always give The DC Extended Universe movies unjust Bad Reviews, Like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad and that Affects people’s opinion even if it’s a really great movies,” read’s the petitions description alongside a photo of the Rotten Tomatoes logo with a red “X” over it.
In an update entitled “Final Announcement,” posted Wednesday, Coldwater wrote “In fact i started this petition to gather dc fans to express our anger just for fun. I didn’t mean it to be taken that serious. After thinking. I found this petition pointless. And the only thing that is does is spreading a speech of hate and online fighting among the supporters and objectors. The movies is something to enjoy. And the hate and fight is the opposite of enjoying,” before noting how he has made up his mind to end the petition.
As of this writing, with 128 reviews tallied so far, “Suicide Squad” sits at a low 31 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and counting. That is still faring better than March’s “Batman v Superman” which ended its Tomatometer run at 27 percent.
“Batman v Superman” was still able to dominate the box office with an impressive $170 million opening weekend. “Suicide Squad” is expected to break August opening records as well.
Directed by David Ayer and starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto, “Suicide Squad” opens in theaters Aug. 5.
