10-year-old car passenger struck by stray bullet while traveling on U.S. Highway 89 in Sanpete County

SANPETE COUNTY, Utah, Nov. 24, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A 10-year-old boy received non life-threatening injuries after he was hit by a stray bullet while traveling in a vehicle in Sanpete County Saturday afternoon.

A news release on Facebook from Sanpete County Sheriff’s Office said at approximately 1:18 p.m., dispatch received a call for service stating a bullet had entered the complainant’s vehicle through the windshield and struck the child in the shoulder.

The vehicle was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 89 just north of Mount Pleasant City at the time it was struck.

“The juvenile was transported by ground ambulance to Utah Valley Hospital where he underwent surgery to remove the projectile and the wound was deemed non-life threatening by medical experts,” the news release said. 

The circumstances surrounding this incident are currently being investigated and appear to involve a family “negligently target shooting in the direction of the highway,” the news release said.

Investigators have been in close contact with the Sanpete County Attorney’s Office regarding charges being filed pending the conclusion of the investigation.
