MILLCREEK CANYON, Utah, June 22, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A 19-year-old Utah man is behind bars, charged in the shooting death of a 17-year-old relative which was originally called in to police as a suicide.

Unified Police Detective Kevin Mallory said officers were dispatched to a trailhead near 4700 East in Millcreek Canyon about 2:30 p.m. Friday with reports of a male with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“Citizens near the incident provided medical aid until police and emergency medical personnel arrived,” Mallory said. “Unfortunately, the male, a 17-year-old, did not survive”

Detectives from the Unified Violent Crimes Unit took over the investigation and quickly determined there had been struggle over the gun and the injury was not self-inflicted.

Emilio Madrigal-Rios, 19, was taken into custody and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on charges of manslaughter and obstruction of justice.

Police are withholding the victim’s name due to his age.

Mallory said formal charges will be screened next week by the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office.
