WEBER COUNTY, Utah, Jan. 6, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — An avalanche was reported at the North Ogden Divide on the Liberty side near Chicken Creek Sunday afternoon.

Weber County said in a Facebook post at 3:45 p.m. that officials estimate the avalanche, which happened at approximately 1:30 p.m., caused compacted snow and debris nearly five feet deep to stretch across the road.

“Officials are still assessing the situation but as of right now, it seems no one is injured,” the post said. “However, one vehicle is stuck and crews are working to clear them out.”

The post goes on: “Crews will be working to clear the road as quickly as possible and expect the road to reopen on Tuesday.”

Drivers are reminded that access to Nordic Valley via the North Ogden Divide is blocked, but travelers are encouraged to use Ogden Canyon as an alternate route.

“Please avoid the area if possible to allow our crews to work safely and quickly,” the post said.

The Utah Avalanche Center tweeted Sunday the current danger rating for northern Utah is considerable, reaching high later in the day.

“Rising avalanche hazard, reaching HIGH later Sunday and into Monday,” the tweet said. “Winds and storm snow will create unstable conditions, including low elevations.”

The danger rating scale has five levels: low, moderate, considerable, high and extreme.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information is made available.
