April 25, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — The remains of a Mapleton man, who had been expected back from a solo hiking trip on Sunday, April 12, have been located in a remote area of the Peavine Canyon region in San Juan County.
The man who died was David Engler, 54, of Mapleton.
Engler was expected to hike in Grand County, but three days after he was reported missing, his pickup truck was found in in San Juan County.
The announcement that his body had been found came Saturday, April 25, from the San Juan County Sheriff.
“At this time, the cause of death is unknown,” the statement says. “Mr. Engler’s remains have been transported to the Utah Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination and to determine the cause of death.
“We extend our deepest condolences to David Engler’s family and friends during this difficult time. We would like to thank the DPS Aero Bureau, San Juan County Search and Rescue, and all the volunteers who have helped us search for Mr. Engler over the last week and a half. We could not do this job without all those who have assisted us, and we are very appreciative of their help.”
