Breaking: 1 dead, 5 critically injured in Big Cottonwood Canyon crash

BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON, Utah, Aug. 17, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — One person is dead and five others in critical condition after an early morning crash Saturday in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Unified Police Detective Kevin Mallory told Gephardt Daily the accident happened about 2:55 a.m. when a car headed down the canyon slammed into the back of a pickup truck where two people were sleeping in the bed of the truck.

Mallory said the car with four people in it careened off the road and onto a steep embankment before rolling back on the pavement and coming to rest on its top.

Three medical helicopters were dispatched to the scene and at least one patient was taken to the hospital by ground ambulance.

Mallory said the victims’ ages appeared to range from teens to young adults.

At least one patient was described in extremely critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators have yet to determine what caused the crash.
