ROY, UTAH – June 22, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) — Police investigators say the bodies found inside a home in Roy home Sunday night were victims of an apparent murder-suicide.

Officers were first called to the house at 2106 W. 4750 South in Roy shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday with reports of a possible assault. Once they made their way inside they found the family of four dead from apparent gunshot wounds.

In a Monday morning press conference Roy police identified the victims as Russell Smith, his wife, Shawna Smith, and their two children, Tylee, age 6, and Blake, age 2.  They say their preliminary investigations indicates Russell Smith killed his wife and children before turning the gun on himself.

Neighbor Lynn Everly described what he saw that fateful evening: “I got up and looked out the window and saw the cops down here, there was about 20 or so cars, so we came at around 10 o’clock and then hung out until around 3:30 a.m,” he said.

“They didn’t tell us anything because they couldn’t get into the house until they had the warrant.”

He said they were a quiet family that kept themselves to themselves. “The dad was working, the mom was working, they always waved, him and I talked a lot,” he said. “We never heard a thing out of them; even when they had family and friends over. They were a good family; you don’t know what makes a person do that.”

Police say there had been no previous history of violence at the home and the motive for the killings remains unclear.
