SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Sept. 17, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A 9-year-old girl is dead after she chased her dog into the street and was hit by a car Saturday morning in Salt Lake City.

The incident occurred in the area of 1465 W. 500 North just before 10:30 a.m., the Salt Lake City Police Department said in a news release.

“The victim was chasing her dog and ran into the street after the animal and did not look before entering the roadway,” the news release said. “The victim was struck by an SUV traveling westbound.”

The child was taken to Primary Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

The driver drove around the corner and stopped following the accident. Officials said the SUV did not have time to stop before hitting the child, and the driver is cooperating with the investigation. At this time it does not appear impairment was a factor in the incident.

The victim’s name has not been released because she is a juvenile.
