Crews battle large grass fire in Salt Lake City industrial area

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Aug. 25, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Experience paid off for crews battling a raging grass fire Saturday evening at 4400 West near 750 South, an area that had caught fire before.

The report of the blaze came in a little before 6 p.m., Salt Lake City Fire Department Public Information Officer Audra Sorensen said.

“We quickly dispatched our crews, and because we had had a grass fire in this area before, this time we made the decision to take a defensive approach,” she said, adding, “It was the absolutely right decision to make.”

By taking a defensive position, instead of actively chasing the fire, Sorensen said, crews were able to contain the blaze to two alarms and get it under control in less than an hour. Nearby industrial buildings, including Western Metal, and a junkyard were briefly threatened, but the only thing that burned was the grassy area.

“I believe the last fire that was here ended up being closer to a four-alarm fire,” Sorensen told reporters.

There were no injuries as a result of this fire.

Sorensen said it isn’t known yet how the fire started, but investigators were on scene as crews cleared the area. She said it would probably be a few days before they reached a full determination as to the cause of the fire and source of ignition.

Gephardt Daily will update this story as more information becomes available.
