Employees evacuated after truck catches fire in Kennecott copper mine

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah, Jan. 1, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — All employees of the Bingham Canyon copper mine, operated by Kennecott, were evacuated Tuesday after a truck caught fire.

The incident occurred in the lower pit of the mine at approximately 2 p.m., according to a tweet from Rio Tinto Kennecott.

“As a precaution all employees were evacuated,” the tweet said. “Everyone on site at the time is safe and accounted for.”

The Mine Safety and Health Administration has been notified.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

“We hope to return to normal operation sometime tomorrow,” the tweet concluded.
